We all have lots of small glands just below the surface of skin called Sebaceous glands. These glands produce natural oil called sebum, which helps to keep the skin smooth and supple. When too much sebum is produced it causes a build up of oil in the hair follices and this creates an ideal environment for bacterium called PROPIONIBACTERIUM acne to grow.
It’s this bacteria that causes the inflammation and redness associated with acne, In servere cases cysts will develop beneath the surface of the skin, and if they rupturre this can cause acne scarring.
Acne is most common in adolescents but can appear for first time in mid twenties or even later. It can be very difficult to treat successfully with topical creams and gels or antibiotics, and can have devastating effects on self confidence and self-esteem.
